Our client Regal Trailers is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join their team in Deer Park, Victoria.
As a Mechanical Engineer you will be responsible for the design, development, review and continuous improvement of semi-trailers and associated mechanical systems manufactured by Regal Trailers. The role applies engineering principles to trailer structure, axle and suspension configurations, braking systems, coupling arrangements, load distribution, durability, manufacturability, compliance and product performance. The position also supports workshop operations by translating engineering requirements into practical manufacturing outcomes for both standard and custom-built trailer solutions.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design, develop and review semi-trailer mechanical systems and structural components for Regal Trailers’ product range, including curtainsiders, drop deck trailers, straight or flat deck trailers, skeleton trailers, dollies and custom-built trailer configurations.
- Prepare, review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, calculations and fabrication requirements for trailer chassis, suspension systems, axle layouts, braking systems, landing gear, coupling arrangements and other associated mechanical components.
- Assess trailer designs for load capacity, weight distribution, stability, functionality, durability and safe operational performance having regard to intended freight and haulage requirements.
- Support the engineering development of custom trailer builds by translating customer requirements and operational specifications into practical, manufacturable and technically sound design outcomes.
- Oversee and provide technical guidance in relation to the assembly, fabrication, fit-out, installation and commissioning of trailer components and mechanical systems within the Deer Park manufacturing facility.
- Analyse and improve product performance in relation to suspension behaviour, axle and component alignment, structural integrity, braking integration, roadworthiness, reliability and long-term serviceability.
- Investigate mechanical faults, build defects, fabrication issues, warranty concerns and product-performance failures, and develop corrective engineering solutions to minimise rework, downtime and future risk.
- Participate in prototype review, inspection, testing and validation of trailers, assemblies and component arrangements to confirm quality, engineering integrity and consistency with operational requirements.
- Review and recommend suitable mechanical components, materials and systems used in trailer manufacture to ensure compatibility, durability, compliance and efficient production outcomes.
- Liaise with management, production staff, welders, fabricators, suppliers and customers regarding design changes, engineering requirements, technical issues, component procurement and manufacturing feasibility.
- Prepare engineering reports, technical documentation, design revisions, process notes, maintenance guidance and workshop support documents to assist production consistency and product standardisation.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve trailer design, reduce material waste, strengthen product durability and improve production efficiency and quality control.
- Ensure engineering work is performed in accordance with relevant Australian standards, safety obligations, quality requirements and sound engineering practice applicable to heavy trailer manufacturing.
Requirements:
- Bachelor degree or higher qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering field.
- At least two (2) years of relevant industry experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical design, fabrication processes, structural and mechanical systems, workshop manufacturing environments and engineering documentation.
- Experience in trailer manufacturing, heavy vehicle engineering, transport equipment, fabrication, manufacturing or related industrial mechanical engineering environments will be highly regarded.
- Ability to interpret and prepare engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, technical documents and manufacturing support materials.
- Experience with component selection, testing, fault analysis, quality control, product improvement and workshop-based technical support is desirable.
